things to do when you get laid off: say no to the...
ok. i’ll admit, i haven’t actually been offered the position yet. but i will be tomorrow … and let me tell you, it’s not worth it. an unlivable wage paired with long hours making ugly shit and managing and unmanageable woman … yeah, not going there. guess i’ll be sending a kind and “regretful” email in the morning.
right now, i’m actually...

Wrong Side of History →
i am a huge fan of this america life. this weeks episode takes a look into “people with wildly popular or unpopular views for one moment in time, and how those views stand up years, decades, even centuries later.” in act one. hey mister dj, NPR’s Adam Davidson talks with a professor of economics from Georgetown University in an attempt to prove to his younger brother dj that dropping...

things to do when you get laid off: stay busy.
i think i may have potentially taken this a bit too far this week … but it’s definitely keeping me from feeling depressed. more importantly, after proclaiming myself new york’s happy free helper, i have started to meet some great people in the industry and finally landed some paid freelance work. i feel guilty at times that i’m not sitting at my computer 10 hours a day...
things to do when you get laid off: go grocery...
i got back from san fran late sunday night … found a barren fridge … stole a piece of my roomies bread and scraped out the peanut butter jar. after a few days of eating out, it’s time to get back on track. fuzz and i made the trip to steve’s c-town on 9th street and came home with the whole store. minus all the fun sugary stuff.
no more eating out. there’s no...

things to do when you get laid off: get a hair cut...
it’s been too long … don’t even want to admit (um … like maybe 5 months!). it’s time. i’m taking this “snow day” as an opportunity to slip into my local salon and get chopped.
things you forget to do when you get laid off:
1. doing your laundry
2. washing the dishes
3. filing your taxes
4. returning your library books
5. reading in general
6. taking a shower … i mean …
you would think that since i’ve got some time on my hands these common tasks wouldn’t be a problem. but somehow, without the structure of a normal day it seems close to impossible to make a point to...

too much coffee ... ooouf.
clothes are strewn alllll over my closet-sized bedroom, left from this mornings fashion fit. my usual one cup of coffee for the day turned into three as i ran around the city meeting with people. i feel like crap and my feet hurt, my room looks like a tornada hit it and all i want to do is lay down and watch some tv … but it was a good day.
all this chaos will lead to something …...

things to do when you get laid off: stop checking...
it’s 10:15 on sunday night and i just realized that i haven’t thought about or checked craigslist once today. this is a big deal. i’ve had a craigslist tab up on my computer since i lost my job three weeks ago and have not been able to get “THE JOB SEARCH!” out of my mind for long enough to stop compulsively checking back every few minutes — just in case.

looking for a way to turn 10 minute gchats into full on marathons? gmail video chat totally does the trick. once you get over the awkward feeling of being seen … and of seeing yourself … you’ll love it.

if you’re like me, spending the day working completely solo or not talking to anyone can be pretty depressing. to “keep me company” i’ve turned to chicago public radio’s “this american life”.

this past saturday was beautiful. even more beautiful because my fuzzy wuzzy and i had restrained ourselves and gotten home by midnight the night before. after realizing we were out of coffee, we turned a trip to the coffee shop into a walk to prospect park and a visit to the central brooklyn public library.
after searching for jack kerouac’s “on the road”, we settled for...

the weekend doesn't count!
ok. maybe it does. but in this case, the first weekend does not count as days unemployed. actually … come to think of it, i was technically employed thursday and friday. shit. my counting system is already screwed. whatever — i wasn’t planning on continuing the counting game anyway.
basically the weekend swayed back and forth from hilarity to depression. binge drinking to binge...

the recap: day one
last thursday was the beginning of the end. or the beginning of the beginning. i’m still deciding. after my usual hazy hour long train ride to midtown, i was greeted with a free coffee from a friend in the elevator. five minutes later i was in my bosses office being told through teary eyes that my position had been eliminated.
what happened next isn’t all that interesting. but it...
